Possible human remains found in Fayette County renews interest in missing person case..

It's been 32 years since Denise Pflum disappeared...but the search for the 18-year-old high school senior continues.

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - It's been 32 years since Denise Pflum disappeared...but the search for the 18-year-old high school senior continues.

Search dogs have detected something in Forth pond on the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary property.

Investigators are in the process of draining the pond located south of Connersville in Fayette County to see if they have a lead..

"The dogs are indicating possibility. No assurance that it's her or anything is there but I feel it's our burden to follow up on it."

The case has haunted the community and been a great mystery of Fayette county and I think it has been the burden of our Sheriff’s Department. It's our investigation," he told WTHR.

Sheriff Laughlin says it could take up to three weeks before they are able to determine if they have a new lead in this case.

It as been a heartbreaking mystery since 1986. Whatever happened to Denise Pflum?

Fayette County Sheriff Joey Laughlin was seven years old when she went missing. He has now been Sheriff for four years.

They borrowed search dogs from Homeland Security that search several locations but they detected something on pond number four along Columbia Road near 400 South at the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary.

"We brought out two more dogs two days later and those dogs hit as well. We began efforts to drain the pond and study the contents," he explained.

Laughlin says he remembers this case like it was yesterday.

"Denise Pflum was an 18-year-old high school senior. Had went to a party Thursday night and the next day was Good Friday.

Forget her purse at the party so told her family she was going back out to the property to get her purse," he remembered.

They would never see or hear from her again.

"There have been rumors and a myriad of things they talk about over the years. Our interest is to bring closure to the family," he continued.

The search area is a good half mile of this road and hard to access especially with the current wet conditions.

Because of the current weather it could be up to three weeks before there is any word about whether this is a true lead at the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary in rural Fayette County but for now it's all residents have since 1986.

Suspect in 1986 Cold Case Dies Months After Confession

The murder of Denise Pflum finally appeared to have a major lead with an arrest in July, but suspect Shawn McClung passed away on Sept. 26 before trial.

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — It has been called the biggest mystery of Fayette County: what happened to Denise Pflum?

The case has haunted the community since 1986.

In March of that year, the star athlete and scholar disappeared without a trace.

The case finally appeared to have a major lead with an arrest this past July, but the suspect passed away on Sept. 26 before a trial or plea deal.

“This is my favorite picture of her; it’s just a crowd picture,” Pflum's mom, Judy, said in a previous WTHR interview.

It’s the pictures and memories that help the family of Denise Pflum pull through another setback. In a previous interview in their living room, they showed her works of art that surround them.

“It allows her to be with us,” her father, David, said.

Denise, who was 18 when she was killed, hasn’t been physically with them in 34 years, leaving her family with only memories and questions.

In July, her ex-boyfriend, 56-year-old Shawn McClung, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter.

“He was arrested on separate charges on defrauding a financial institution and check deception.

He had a warrant for his arrest, so he was incarcerated, and we took the opportunity to speak to him about the case again,” said Fayette County Sheriff Joey Laughlin.

Detectives say he confessed, possibly because he was terminally ill.

Denise’s parents were called in and actually faced the suspected killer.

“We were asked to come to the jail that day while he was being interviewed and try to persuade him to tell us the truth,” they said in a statement.

Detectives didn’t get a chance to fully question McClung in 1986 because he moved to Arizona shortly after Denise disappeared.

He returned to Connersville about four years ago.“He was a person that we had wanted to speak to in re-evaluating the case,” Laughlin said.

At a court appearance in early September, Denise’s mom remembered when she saw him: “His eyes were blank, like had no soul.

"McClung passed away Saturday after spending about a week at an Indianapolis hospital dealing with an undisclosed illness.

“We were very disappointed that he didn’t give us the information we wanted but are hopeful that his attorney may be authorized to reveal more information after his death,” the Pflum family said.

The community helped raise $100,000 for a reward to finally give the family closure.“Until we find Denise Pflum’s remains, this investigation stays open.

We want to give the family closure, and we have some things we’re going to continue to look into,” Laughlin said.

The lawyer representing McClung said he is working with the Fayette County prosecutor and sheriff’s department to release more information and evidence from McClung.

Laughlin and Det. Chad Blaes believe someone else knows what happened to Denise Pflum and continue investigating and asking for any tips.

On 2-24-1987 10 year old Linda Weldy was dropped off by her school bus near her home on McClung Road in LaPorte Indiana..The bus driver & other children saw Linda Weldy walk to the family mailbox like she did everyday..

The 10 year old had to walk about 250 yards down the curved gravel driveway to her home which some areas had a limited view because of trees along the driveway..

10 year old Linda Weldy never made it home..

On 3-17-1987 Linda's body was found by a farmer along some abandoned railroad tracks on County Road 500 South near Kingsbury Indiana..

10 year old Linda Weldy had been strangled...

Alot has been said about Serial Killer Larry D Hall as the one who Abducted & Murdered Linda Weldy...

But there was another Serial Killer operating in the same area in 1987..

1980's Child Serial Killer David E Penton...

Penton traveled between Texas & Ohio several times taking different routes from 1983 to 1988..

Penton was caught in 1988 in Ohio for Kidnapping & Murdering 9 Year old Nydra Ross..

One of Penton's favorite routes entering Indiana was the 80 & 90 Turnpike exiting onto the South Bend exit... 

In 2006 Mja was given Info about 2 Indiana cases by a former cell-mate of Penton's...

One case was a1986 Abduction of a 6 year old female who hasnt been found..

The other case was a 1987 Abduction & Murder of 10 year old female thats never been solved..

During our research the 1987 Linda Weldy case is one of the cases we been looking at as being a possible Victim of Penton's...

The age of Weldy fits more with Penton's age group than Hall's..

The Weldy case does fit one on Penton's M.O.'s & the Weldy case matches a Missing Person case in Cabot Pennsylvania.

On 2-22-1985 the 8 year old female was dropped off by her school bus only 100 yards from her home..The 8 year old female never made it home..

She vanished without a trace & has never been found..

Mja has been trying to gain more Info about the Weldy case from the former cellmate of Penton's but nothing solid to produced any results...

A decades-old case out of Monroe County was recently solved.

Ruth Hoffman, who went missing out of River Rouge in June 1986, was identified last month using DNA.

Acting Sgt. Jeff Pauli of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Hoffman’s remains were found in that county in December 1986..

Missing : 19 Year Old Kristy Lynn Booth

Missing since 2-2-1980 from Midland, Midland County, Texas...

Miss Booth was last seen on 2-2-1980 at the Dimensions Nightclub..

A male friend of hers who is now deceased,dropped Booth & a female friend off at the club...

When the male friend returned to the Club with Miss Booth's car around 11 that night,he couldn't find the girls anywhere..

Witnesses claim Booth walked outside the Club  around 11 o'clock that night...

It was five days later before a Missing Persons police report was filed..

Miss Booth's 1977 maroon & white AMC Pacer was found abandoned 2 miles south of HI-20 on South Highway 349 Rankin Highway

Investigators do not believe Booth left the club willingly for she she left without her shoes and coat & the weather was cold & icy...

Most of Miss Booth's nights were spent at The Great Gatsby, a restaurant on Cuthbert Avenue , where she worked as a cocktail waitress...

Some of the circumstances of this case seem to match other unsolved cases in Midland County & surrounding area's..

There were so many serial killers operating in Texas during the late 1970's to late 1980's..

When Law-Enforcement started arresting some of these serial killers..

They learned some serial killers had no boundries when it cames to how far they would travel to abduct someone or to dump the body of a Victim..

Its even possible that Miss Booth has been found but remains Unidentified..

Mja turned over some Info to them that might be related to this case..

What Mja posted on 2-22-08 that we expected to gain some Info & get some Info confirmed sometime in 2010..

Mja gained what we needed on 12-3-2010...

Since that time we have been doing research because the Info involves confirming that two June 1984 cases in Alabama are related to the Jackson case..

Mja has the time-line, the pattern, the M.O. , & the route that was taken to Georgia & to Alabama..

But at this time these things havent come togather as a whole to say all 3 cases are related..

In return Mja might have to question our Ohio inmate informant again...

But that wont happen until April 2012 during our Indiana Operations...

She vanished from the law office in Manhattan Plaza Toledo Ohio

where she worked as a secretary..

She had arrived at work before anyone else, done her regular

morning tasks and disappeared before her coworkers arrived..

She had been receiving suspicious calls before she disappeared...

Because of that she recently had had an emergency buzzer installed at her desk at work..

She disappeared without a trace, there were no sign of a struggle.

Her purse and car keys were gone.

Her car remained outside.

The doors were locked..

Foul play is suspected...

Hoffman was last seen  leaving her residence on 6-30-1986..

She was on foot, in the vicinity of the 50 block of Leroy Street in River Rouge,Michigan..

Earlier that morning, Hoffman returned in a taxicab to the home sheshared with her daughter in River Rouge, Michigan..

She had been out all night and came back wearing hospital scrubsinstead of the clothes she had on the night before..

She was covered with bruises. Ruth told her daughter she had beenbeaten  & raped by two men known to her, after she went to a localbar for a job interview..

Ruth said she had been to the hospital and had a rape kit taken, and that her clothes were at the hospital..

She asked her daughter not to call the police. After putting on makeup, Ruth went outside for a walk to clear her head..

Her family never saw her again. She was officially reported missing on July 7, 1986.

In a strange twist :

Records indicate Ruth visited a medical clinic on 7-3-1986, just days after she left home.

She was seen as a new patient and was given a diptheria / tetanus immunization..

Seven years after she disappeared, on 10-8-1993, a traffic ticket was issued to "Ruth Sharon Russie" in Pennsylvania. ..

The ticket gives Ruth's birthdate and an address in Belleville, Michigan...

It said her license exspired..

Mja has a copy of the ticket..

This lead is being followed but it has led no-where during the years..

Mja has a good working relationship with the Pennsylvania State Police concerning other cases..

It helped Mja to get Info faster concerning the Hoffman Case..

Lynn Ann Thompson : 26 years old

Missing : 6-26-1989 Vigo County Indiana

Went Missing : Lynn Ann Thompson has never been seen or heard from & even with her car being found there is still no direction to follow..

Mja has been involved with a search effort in locating Lynn Ann Thompson since July 3 2001..

She became our 12th case because of the locations of the search area's..

Thompson was last seen at her home in Prairie Creek..

Her grey Pontiac Coupe was found at the old K-Mart parking lot on South U.S. 41 and Davis Drive in Terre Haute Indiana..

There was no sign of Thompson at the scene..

Prior to Thompson's disappearance she tole her Family to pursue the case if she ever become missing..

Thompson is described as a loving mother..

Foul play is suspected..

It seems now that we learned on November 8, 2007  Thompson's father-in-law Oscar Thompson Sr. is capable of Murder..

Our search area's have been narrowed down abit to area's that Oscar Thompson Sr might feel as a comfort zone..

Felton's sister drove her Parents to the Airport when she came back home Wendy Felton had disappeared..

If Police have any suspects in her disappearance they havent  made it clear that they do..

Recently 2  suspects have come to light as Persons Of Interest in the disappearance of Wendy L Felton..

Those suspects are Serial Killers Larry Hall & Michael Lee Lockhart..

Lockhart has at least one Indiana Victim The sexual assault, murder & mutilation of 16 year old Windy Gallagher in her Griffith, Indiana Home..

Lockhart is one of 3 also a suspects in the Abduction of Wendy Louise Felton from her home in Marion Indiana..

Lockhart has said he has killed up to 30 young girls or women..

Lockhart was EXECUTED 12-09-97 6:24 PM BY STATE OF TEXAS for the killing of a Texas Police Officer..

Became our 8th case on 6-4-2001..

Miss Felton hasnt been found..

Mja will conduct more ground searches for Miss Felton in September 2011..

Mja has been working on the Sherrill Case since November 2003 on behalf of Mike {Shannon's Father} & his wife Becky Sherrill..

On 11-30-2005 Becky Sherrill stated to the Frankfort Times the text below:

" Becky Sherrill said when she and her husband first received the offer from MJA Inc.to investigate the case,they called the Indiana State Police to confirm the company’s legitimacy."

“ We had him checked out,”she said,“and found out they are on the level.They’ve been very helpful and have come up with a lot of things.”

When Mja met with Mike & Becky Sherrill for the first time our goal was set in stone..

Beyond anything else our goal was to locate Shannon Sherrill..

The Sherrill Family & Mja started their investigation into the Disappearance of Shannon Sherrill..

Shannon's case was always ruled a " Stranger Abduction "..

Mike & Becky Sherrill & Mja always knew there was a Texas connection because the State of Texas requested Shannon's Parents DNA..

What our investigation un-covered is just chilling..

Our Investigation led to 1980's Child Serial Killer David E Penton..

At this time Penton has 5 murder convictions including killing his own son..

Missing Person Debra Jean Cole

Our legal department has read some of the Posts that was written on the Lebanon Chatter site attacking Mja & the work we do..

Due to the Hostile Intent without merit against Mja shown by some people on this Lebanon Chatter site in Boone County Indiana in everything we do..

Our legal department states it wouldnt be in the best interest of the case or for Mja to have non-Mja staff members to take part in the search for Debra Jean Cole..

Even though waivers would have to be signed & I.D. Mja cant control non-staff searches behavior or intent..

Its too much of a risk for Mja to trust that non-staff searchers will act in the proper manner..

Due to these reasons our 2 day ground search for Debra Jean Cole will not be announced to the Public..

Mja will Post & E-mail Photo's & Reports of the ground search after they have taken place..

I am Sorry but considering the circumstances we had no choice but to conduct our search operations in this manner..

Mja will have photo's of the search..

Debra Jean Cole :12 years old

Missing 8-29-1981 from Lebanon Indiana Boone County..

Became our 6th case on 6-1-2001 which was our 1st day as a

search & rescue group..

One of the reasons to join in the search effort for Debra Jean Cole was the geo-locations related to other cases..

It has been 29 Years & the Victim Debra Jean Cole & her Family & Friends are still waiting for Justice & for Cole to be located..

It would be safe to say if the main suspect was the guilty one :

Debra Jean Cole remains should be located close by or in the same area where Debra's sister Frances was discovered murdered..

It has been stated :

Debra Jean Cole was last seen at her home reportedly by Omer R Beebout @ about 11 a.m. on 8-29-1981..

Cole didnt take any of her belongings with her & had no travel plans..

Debra Jean Cole was reported as a runaway on 8-31-1981..

Debra Jean's Mother:

Sue Cole was living with her parents in Lebanon when her husband Jerry Cole died in a truck crash in Arizona in 1969..

Leaving her to support herself & their four children on a waitress' salary...

Sue Cole & her children eventually moved in with Omer R "Steve" Beebout in his home on Lebanon's south side..

It is rumored that Debra Jean Cole was Pregnant by Omer R." Steve " Beebout who became the main suspect in her disappearance..

Debra Jean's sister: Frances Annette Cole disappeared from the same home on October 4, 1983...

On 10-7-1983 Annette Cole was found & she had been raped & shot in the back & dumped along U.S. 52 north of Lebanon...

The coroner determined that Annette died on the same day she was found 10-7-1983..

3 days after she vanished...

" Steve " Beebout was a suspect in Frances's homicide..

Beebout then became the prime suspect in Debra's 1981 disappearance...

Beebout died of a heart-attack on 4-25-1989 he was only 49 years old..

In early 1999 ten years after Frances's death : Authorities matched semen & other fluid samples taken from Frances's remains to Beebout's DNA..

Investigators believe :

The evidence proves that Beebout was responsible for Frances's death..

It is also theorized that Beebout may have been involved in Debra's disappearance...

Debra Jean Cole has never been found & her case remains unsolved..
